MetaTrader is a versatile trading platform available on various operating systems, including Android, iOS, Linux (with Wine), macOS, and Windows. If you’re trading using the MetaTrader mobile app, setting alerts directly from your mobile device is straightforward and convenient. However, if you use custom indicators or Expert Advisors (EAs) on your desktop and need alerts when you’re away from your computer, this guide is for you.
Setting Alerts on MetaTrader Desktop
MetaTrader Desktop has an inbuilt alert option that allows you to set alerts on specific price levels easily. Here’s how you can set up an alert:
- Move your cursor near the desired price level on the chart.
- Right-click on the chart.
- From the right-click menu, select Trading -> Alert.
This will automatically add an alert at that price level.
You can modify this alert by navigating to the Terminal window and selecting the Alert tab at the bottom. To set a mobile push notification, follow these steps:
- Right-click on the alert you want to modify.
- Select Modify.
- Under the Action option, choose Notification for mobile alerts.
Activating Mobile Notifications
To receive mobile notifications from your desktop MetaTrader, you need to complete a setup process in the MetaTrader settings:
- Press Control + O to open the Options Menu, or navigate to Menu -> Tools -> Options.
- Go to the Notifications tab.
Enter your MetaQuotes ID here.
Next, download the MetaTrader app on your mobile device. Ensure you download the same version you use on your desktop (e.g., MetaTrader 4 on both devices). In the mobile app settings, find your MetaQuotes ID and enter it into the desktop application’s notification settings. Click the Test button to send a test push notification to your mobile device. Once the test is successful, you will receive alerts on your mobile whenever you set any alert on your desktop and change the action to Notification instead of Sound.
VPS Requirement
If you use a custom indicator on your desktop that provides mobile alerts, your desktop needs to run continuously to send these alerts. This is where a Virtual Private Server (VPS) becomes essential. A VPS ensures your MetaTrader platform runs 24/7 without interruption, allowing you to receive alerts on your mobile device at any time. Additionally, your mobile device must have an active internet connection and the MetaTrader app running in the background to receive these notifications.
